LION. PITCHED BATTLE BETWEEN CANADIANS AND RIEL’S FORCES. OUSTING OF REBEL PRISONERS. FURTHER REDUCTION OF BANK RATE OF DISCOUNT. (Received May 14, 3 p.m.) Ottawa, May 13. Advices from Saskatchewan state that a pitched battle took place on Monday last between General Middleton s forces and the rebels under Louis Riel, lesulting in the enemy being ousted from their rifle pits at the point of the bayonet. During the simple the Batouciie Indians managed to rescue a number of prisoners who were in custody. The Canadians loss on Middleton’s side was 16 killed and wounded, whilst a large number of Riel’s men were killed,
London, May 13. The frozen meat ex ship Canterbury, from Lyttelton, is examined and found in good condition. (Received May 15, p.m.) May 14. The Directors of the Bank of England to-day further reduced the bank rates from 3 per cent, to 2| per cent.
