A PLAIN REPLY.
[TO THE EDITOR.]
Sir— lt is not false but true that the Rev. Mr Hay promised to resign in three months from date of Presbytery meeting before last. It is not true but false that he merely said “ I promise to say within three months when I shall resign.” Witness the minutes of Presbytery and all who were present. It is not true but false that I suppressed official documents, i.e., Mr Hay’s withdrawal of resignation. If suppression there was, Mr Hay was the suppressor. With regard to selling or mortgaging church property to pay Mr Hay’s arrears of stipend—let Mr Campbell try the experiment. He will find that it is not so easy to do it as he imagines. As to Mr Hay’s grand acclamation “ Point me to a single instance where the Presbytery dared to loose an ordained minister, his flock protesting;” I merely say “ Where is your flock which you received in charge from the Presbytery ? It is not your flock, but a mere fraction of it who protest. I pass over all the other fine words and statements in Mr Hay’s letter and Mr Campbell’s—they are not insolent—oh! no. They are bluster—that is all. I will not trouble you, Mr Editor, further.—Yours, &c.,
W. Douglas Hokitika, April 29, 1885,
