A Cabinet Council was held to-day, at which further measures were adopted for placing the defences of the colony in a satisfactory condition. Melbourne, April 16. The Australian superintendent of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company confirms the news that the Massiiia will be employed as an armed cruiser on the Australian station, and states that she will be handed over to the naval authorities at Sydney. Arrived, this morning, the steamship Wairarapa, from the Bluff. April 17. The Government is in receipt of a telegram from the Agent-General to the effect that the political situation in England is still very menacing. The trial of the convict Barnes for the murder of the late J. B. Slack was concluded to-day. The prisoner was found guilty and sentenced to death. Adelaide, April 16. Arrived, this morning, the Royal Mail steamship Lusitania, with London mails to March 13.
