THE WAR IN SOUDAN.
[REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph—Copyright, REPORTED WITHDRAWAL OF THE CAMEL CORPS. (Received April 16, 0.40 a.m.) London, April 14, The report published yesterday by the Daily News to the effect that the troops forming the various Camel Corps in Egypt were to be withdrawn is declared to be without foundation, RECONNAISSANCE NEAR HASHEEN. CAPTURE OP PRISONERS, AND SHEEP AND CAMELS. [Per Reuter’s Special Correspondent.] (Received April 16, 12.30 p.m.) Suakin, April 15, A reconnaissance was made to-day in the vicinity of Hnsheen, in the course of which the British troops captured forty prisoners, as well as 600 sheep and camels. The Arabs offered little resistance. + In a telegraphic despatch from General Wolseley to the Secretary of State for War on the Ist February, she says:— “ There are 26 survivors of Colonel Stewart’s party at Berber. They are Syrians and Greeks. They are not kept prisoners, but cannot leave town.” Hasheen Wells lie a few miles south of Handoub, due west of Suakin, and three miles nearer. An officer commanding Cavalry on a reconnaissance from Suakin exceeded his instructions. The enemy from hills prepared ambush in a khor, two miles from Handoub. The Cavalry reaching this khor on their return were obliged to gallop round the enemy’s flank under heavy fire. Gregory took on his horse two Hussars in succession, and saved one. Stopford also saved a man similarly.
