»~M . [united press association.] Dunedin, April 14. Private news received here says that Mr Richard Canavan, storekeeper, of Okarito, and well known in Hokitika, has died suddenly in Sydney. Wellington, April 14. Nothing further has been heard of the man-of-war reported in Cook Strait yesterday afternoon, and it is thought that the information received by the Government was incorrect. Auckland, April 13. Trewhftller, a lunatic at the lunatic asylum, while working in the grouuds attached to that institution this morning, suddenly struck Mr Thompson, warder, recently from the south, on the neck with a pitchfork, killing him instantly. J. Allom, a jockey, while riding Alaska on the Takapuna racecourse last week, while training, got thrown, and has died from concussion ou the brain. At the inquest the verdict was " accidental death." J. M. Dargaville, M.H.R., proposes raising a defeuce contingent of 400 from the gum diggers and bushmen of Northern Wairoa. The Premier left for Watkato to-day. The first-class militia are being enrolled. In the case at the criminal sessions of Robert Prendergast, for wife murder at Pokene, the jury returned a verdict of guilty with a recommendation to mercy on the ground of previous insanity. The prisoner said nothing iu defence, save that he was sorry he did not kill the man (meaning Buchanan), of whom he was jealous.
