BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The adjourned meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening last; present—His Worship the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq.), Crs. Nicholson, Davies, Ziegler, and Maloney. The outward correspondence was approved of. A letter was read from Mr R. Millson, drawing the attention of the Council to the state of Union street, concerning which he had written to the Council eight months ago. The culvert near to his yard, for which ho paid £2 a year extra to his rates, was not safe, and there were dangerous holes in the street. Applicant also desired that a light might be stationed there.—On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Nicholsou, the letter was referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to put the culvert referred to in proper repair. A letter was read from Mr Robt. Robertson (Dimedin), Hon. Sec. United Fire Brigades Association, in reference to the appointment of Fire Inspectors, the consideration of which was held over till next meeting. The Treasurer submitted his bond for the approval of the Council, which was accepted, and the Mayor authorised to deposit the same with the Bauk of New Zealand. Reports of the Public Works Committee were read, and tenders opened and dealt with as follows: For catting Zigzag Bluff, according to specifications :—Carlo Marra, £39 10s; Wm. Minto, Is 5Jd per yard; Wm, Hunt, Is 3d per yard; P. M'Namara, £2B; G. Seterina, £43. Two deposits being informal through having no deposit enclosed, and the others being above the estimate, it was resolved that no tender be accepted, but that the work be done by the maintenance contractor, at schedule price, provided that he accept the estimate of quantity of measurement, viz. 320 yards, as being correct. For painting and lettering the Fire Brigade Station, the tender'of Mr J. O'Hagan, at £3 5s was accepted. The report of the Reserves Committee was read and dealt with. It stated that the Committee could not recommend extending the present Recreation Ground, as the soil was altogether unsuitable for the purpose; but they recommended that six acres be cleared and grubbsd on the west end of the Borough Reserve, for the purpose of commencing the formation of a racecourse, and that specifications be prepared and lenders called for the work as .soon as possible.—The repott was received aul adoi.tivl, »n<] he Reserves Committee Ut prepare plans and specifications, aud also an estimate.
