HOKITIKA RACES.
The second day’s races of the Westland Racing Club were held at Hokitika on Tuesday. Fine weather (the Times says) again drew a crowded attendance to the racecourse, over 1000 being present by two o’clock. The booths again did a good business, and £756 went through Lynch’s totalisator, making a total for the two days of £l4Bl. Mr Linn’s band played during the day. The Stand was well patronised and the races were, on the whole, satisfactory, with one or two exceptions. The following are the particulars of the racing;— Handicap Hurdle Race.—£3s; sc second horse to receive £5 out of stake; 2 miles. Reedy’s Young Barbarian, lOst. 21b, 1 H. Cameron’s Harkaway, 9st. ... 2 A. Cameron’s St. Leonards, 9st, 2B). 0 Howell’s Banjo, lOst 0 Mr Evans got the four away to a very good start, Young Barbarian assuming the lead, with Harkaway close up. The other two. Banjo and St. Leonards, were soon out of it, and Young Barbarian, who was never headed, won somewhat easily. There was £124 on the totalisator; dividend, £2 13s. ’ Novel Selling Race.—£2s; 1 £ miles and a distance ; post entry £1 ss. . Peake’s Barney, 9st, 31b 1 Lynch’s Never Mind, 9st. 41b. ... 2 Brimble’s Pilot, 9st. 21b. ... ... 0 Bussell’s Cob, 9st. 31b 0 Never Mind got the worst of the start, the others running in a cluster. Barney soon took the lead and Cobb and Pilot were passed by Never Mind, who most have won easily had she been ridden, but she did not catch Barney, who won on sufferance. There was £ll2 on the totalisator; dividend, £1 14s. The winner was sold for £ls 10s. Westland Handicap £7O; second horse to receive £lO out of stake ; 2 miles, ; Cameron’s b g Wee Roddie, svrs. Bst ... ‘ i Matthew’s ch g Comet, 6yrs., Bst 51b Clarke’s b g Elfin King, aged, 7st’. Elfin King went oflE with the lead at a rattling pace and led the first time round, with Comet and Wee Roddie in close attendance on him. Comet took the lead the second time past the Stand with Wee Roddie close up. A grand race ensued between Comet and Wee Roddie, the latter, however, came very strongly just before reaching the straight, and won with something to spare. Totalisator, £234; dividend, £2 17s fid. Open Handicap—lo so vs. open to all horses which had not won a prize at the meeting; weight for age; 1 mile. Harcourt’s Zulu, 9st. 31b. ... ... 1 Furness’s Lady Ellen, 9st. 51b. 2 Freeth’s Comstock, 9st. 41b. ... 3 Russell's Cob, 9st. 51b ’ q Barton’s Zulu, 9st. 51b. ... ... Q Foley’s Brian Born, 9st. 51b, ... 0 Adamson’s Little Sister, 9st. ... Q This was a good race, hotly contested and was a very close contest between the first two. Lady Helen was the favorite. Totalisator, £124 : dividend, £ll 3s. District Handicap £3O; second horse to receive £5 out of stakes; LI miles and a distance. " Adamson's Maggie, 7st. 41b. ... 1 Peake’s Barney, 7st. 21b. ... ... 2 H. Cameron’s Harkaway, 6st. 121 b. 3 Maggie took the lead from the start, and though pressed at one or two stages of the race by Barney, was never headed. A protest was lodged against the winner for a cross, Totalisator, £112; dividend, £1 10s. Consolation—£2o; 1 mile; post entry For this event, which was run as the shades of night were falling, four started, Playboy, Lady Helen, St. Leonards, and Black Prince. Lady Helen won. Totalisator, £SO; dividend, £3 Gs.
