BATTLE BETWEEN DESERTERS AND THE MAHDI FORCES. THE DEFEAT OF THE LATTER. (Received April 6, 0.40 a.m.) Suakin, April 5. The whole of the troops under command of Gen. Graham returned here today with the exception of a single regiment of Indian Native Infantry, which remains behind. The garrison will protect the zureha until Monday, when they will return here, and the adjoining camps and zareba be abandoned. The movement will commence on Monday for the concentration of troops along the railway line to Handoub, which is making good progress. It is hoped the force will lie able to reach that place in about a week's time, London, April 5. A telegram has been received by the ■ War Office from Sir Gerald Graham, in which he praises the demeanor of the Australian troops during the recent advance on Tamai, staling that they
cheerfully shared (ho hardships of the movement and proved themselves worthy of their comrades. Cairo, April 4. A report has reached ibis place to the effect that an engagement has recently occurred between the Mahdi’s forces and a number of deserters from Kordofan, with the result that the followers of the Mahdi were completely defeated, with great loss. wan—wa»J»i»tjaa!.ww
