" Afghan."—The nominal strength of the Russian Army, reorganised since the Turkish War, is about 2,300,000 men on the war footing, and 750,081 on the peace footing ; but these are scattered over the vast empire, which, including Russia Proper, Poland, Finland, Caucausia, Siberia, Turkestan, &c, numbered, in 1882, a population of 100,038,342 souls.
