Special telegrams to the Press Association statu that pacific assurances have been received in London from the Czar in regard to Afghan affairs ; and that the Czar writes to the Emperor of Cermany that he does not think the Afghanistan difficulty will threaten peace. The St. Petersburg journals also are writing on the subject in a very pacific tone. After the meeting of the Hospital Committee last evening, the Hospital Fete Committee held a meeting, at which the concert sub-committee submitted their programme, for the entertainment and ball, which was adopted. Messrs Fitzsimons and Rudkin were appointed to canvass Seddon street for sports money, and the canvassing of Main street for the same purpose was left to Mr Ziegler. A special meeting of the Westlaud Board of Education was held at Hokitika last evening, to allocate the building grant; present—Mr R. J. Seddon° (chairman), Messrs M'Whirter, Rose, Jack, Rae, and Mueller. After a great deal of discussion (the Times reports) it was resolved to call for tenders for painting the Kumara school-house and teacher's residence, Arahura Road school and teacher's residence, Kanieri school-house, Ross school-house, and Donohue's schoolhouse, It was also resolved to call for

tenders for additions to Stafford school house, for removing school-house at Upper Crossing, Arahura, for teacher's residence, Ross, for removal of Gillespie's school-house and Arawata School. The meeting terminated at a late hour.
