GREYMOUTH RACES.
There was a large and respectable attendance (the Argus reports) at the races yesterdaj', the number being variously estimated but by general consent at 1000 persons. The totalisator was fairly patronised, £967 having passed through it during the day. West Coast Pkoduce Stakes, of 35sovs., second horse to receive 5 sovs. from the stake; 1 mile. Mr Thurogood's b g Playboy, 5 years, 9st 51b 1 Mr J. Kilgour's c h m flekateramea, 4 years, 9st 2 Mr A. Blair's ch g Dumbuck, 2 years, sst 61b 3 This was a gift from the start to Playboy, who won by a length. Totalisator, £B4 ; dividend £2 5s 6d. Greymouth Jockey Club Handicap, of 125 sovs.; 2 miles ; second horse to receive 25 sovs. from stake. Mr M'Gaffin's b g Cardigan, aged, Bst 1 Mr Thurogood's b h Volunteer, aged, Bstl2lb ... 2 Mr S. Emmerson's b m Marie Stuart, aged, 7st 61b 3 Volunteer was the favorite on the totalisator, only £62 each being on Marie Stuart and Cardigan. Totalisator, £246 : div., £3 lis. Hack Race, of lOsovs. ; £ mile heats without dismounting; minimum weight, 9st. There were five entries, namely Cockfield Putter, Maori Boy, Crazy Jane, Brian Boru, and Cob, the majority of them familiar in hack races. Maori Boy was the favorite at the totalisator. The first heat was won by Maori Boy by a short length ; but he won the next much easier; the others were nowhere in the race. Railway Stakes Handicap, of 40 sovs. : lj miles ; second horse to receive ssovs. from stake. Mr S. Emmerson's b m Marie Stuart, aged, Bst. 101 b 1 Mr George Matthews' ch g Comet, 6 years, Bst. 101 b 2 Mr J. W. Jones's blk g Hop-picker, 5 years, 7st. 101 b 3 Marie Stuart won by two lengths, with Hop-picker a good third. In the totalisator Marie was the favorite, nearly half the money being on her. Amount in totalisator, £246 ; div., £l lßs 6d. Hurdle Handicap of 40sovs. ; second horse to receive ssovs. from stakes ; 2 miles. Mr J. W. Jones' b m Miore, aged, lOst. 71b ... 1 Mr G. Matthews' ch g Comet, a»ed. lOat. 81b. ... ?.. ... ... 2 Mr H. Cameron's Harkaway, aged, 9st 3 This race .afforded the most excitement of any of the events of the day, and evoked an enthusiasm at the finish by no means common with a Greymouth crowd. Miore was the fancy in the totalisator. The total amount invested in the totalisator was £IBO ; dividend, £1 lis.
