THE WAR IN SOUDAN.
[REUTERS TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph. —Copyright. ARRIVAL OP GEN. GRAHAM, STAFF, AND GRENADIER GUARDS at SUAKIM. (Received March 14, 11.50 a.m.) Suakim, March 13. Lieut-General Sir Gerald Graham, commanding the expedition to operate in the direction of Berber, and his staff, and a battalion of the Grenadier Guards, have arrived at this port. [special to press association.] London, March 10. One million has been voted for the Soudan expedition. The advance from Sonakim commences on Monday. The Government are wavering in their decision as to whether they should endeavour to destroy the Mahdi. Lord Derby has forwarded a despatch to Lord Loftus in which he states that he was surprised at the quickness displayed in organising the New South Wales contingent, and also at the military efficiency of the men. He also recognises the public and private liberality shown in the matter. It is reported that the Mahdi has retreated from Khartoum southward to Abdah Island, in consequence of the scarcity of food and on account of the discontent among his followers. It is expected that a rising will take place in Khartoum between those who are faithful to him and the malcontents. The Mahdi lives in daily danger of assassination. March 11. . The Times trusts that the loyal enthusiasm displayed by the colonies in regard
to assistance for the Soudan will induce an adhesion to the further offers made, in case of their being required for other foreign service. March 12. Trubner and Co., booksellers and publishers, 57 and 59 Ludgato Hill, have presented three hundred books to the New South Wales contingent for the Soudan.
