The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 1885.

The interview between Earl Granville, and Councillor de Staal, the Russian Ambassador to England, does not seem to be resulting in a very amicable understanding with regard to the disposition of Russian troops now in Turkestan and Afghanistan, and it appears from a telegram to-day that the British Government has demanded the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from beyond the Afghan frontier. The situation is generally deemed to be most critical, and active warlike preparations are now proceeding both in England and India in view of possible hostilities. The sea was too rough yesterday to allow of the Hokitika and Grey bars being worked. The steamers St. Kilda and Herald were off the Grey bar, and the Zephyr and Wanganui off Hokitika. The Mahinapna was also detained at Westport. A meeting of the Benevolent Society will be held in the Town Hall at eight o’clock this evening. Sir J. Vogel’s speech in Auckland is considered in Wellington to have given strength to the Government. The Post eulogises its eminently practical character. Fidelity Company’s programme on the Christchurch Autumn Handicap is announced for 4000 members, £1250 for horses, £750 for New Zealand bonds.
