DEATH OF MAJOR-GENERAL SIR HERBERT STEWART.

(Received February 21, 10.50 a.m.) Cairo, February 19. News is to hand that Major-General Sir Herbert Stewart died on Mondaylast, at Gakdul, from the injuries he received at the battle near Metemneh on the 19th ult.

London, February 16. The offer of further assistance made by the Canadian Government for the repression of the Soudan rebellion has been accepted by the Imperial Government, The Victorian Government have asked for details regarding the refusal of tho assistance from Victoria,

The Press generally eulogise the action of the colonies in the matter. The Times states that the British soldiers should welcome those from the colonies and suggests that the Queen should present them with a standard. Osman Digna is fortifying his position at Tamar.

February 17. Lord Wolseley has wired to Lord Loftus expressing his pride and pleasure at having colonial soldiers under his command.

The troops at Korti are delighted at the prospect of having colonial comrades with them. The Government will ask for a further vote of two millions for the Soudan expedition. Major-General Sir Herbert Stewart, who was severely wounded near El Metemneh, is dying. The Queensland Government have offered to send volunteers to join the Australian Brigade which is being forwarded to the Soudan. It is considered that their offer is certain to be accepted.

February 18. The Times states that the Government ought to over-rule the decision given by the War Office in refusing assistance from Victoria, as such refusal is likely to cause disgust with the Government.

Two thousand Arabs are reinforcing El Metemneh.

February 19. It is believed that all the colonies except New South Wales will be warned that any troops that they may wish to send will probably be too late for an immediate campaign, but the decision in the matter will be left optional with the colonies.
