Dunedin, February 19. An old man named Martin was accidentally killed at Broad Bay this morning.

February 20. Mr J. Fulton who recently forwarded to his Excellency the Governor an offer to raise and equip with the assistance of friends in Dunedin, a corps for despatch to the seat of war in the Soudan, this morning received the following reply from his Excellency,— “ Christchurch, February 20th, 1885, 11.50 a.m.—Received your telegram yesterday afternoon and appreciate highly the loyal offer of yourself and all concerned. I cannot reply however till I have obtained the opinion of my Ministers. W. F. D. Jervois.” In the meantime Mr Fulton is busily engaged in enlisting recruits, and has met with great success.

. Christchurch, February 19. A deplorable accident happened in Craiuner Square to-day, whereby a young man, Edward Carter, lost his life. He hired a horse from a livery stable, and the animal bolted with him. He clung to the horse’s neck, but was tb rown off, and the horse fell on him in clearing a fence. When picked up he was unconscious, and died in the hospital shortly after.

February 20. Captain Hammcrsley, C battery Artillery, Timaru, and Martin, E battery, Christchurch, offer to proceed to Soudan; the former with 50 men from South Canterbury, and the latter with 30 members of his battery. The offer has been forwarded to the Government by Colonel Lean.

Wellington, February 20. The Board of Health authorities have taken steps to have the house from which Kale Kelly, a puerperal fever patient, who died, was taken fiom,•thoroughly fumigated. No further cases of blood poisoning havo occurred at the hospital.

Wanganui, February 20. A man named Macdonald, prospecting at Tokomaru, sent to the Herald a quartz specimen showing gold, found at Tokomaru, up the Wanganui river, and the special reporter of the Chronicle reports the find as floating quartz, containing good gold, and a reef is supposed to exist in the immediate vicinity.
