THE SYDNEY CONTINGENT FOR SOUDAN. OFFERS PROM VICTORIA AND SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
(Received February 17, 8.40 p.m.) Sydney, February 17.
The Governor received a telegram to-day from General Wolseley, dated Soudan, February 16, in which bis lordship says—“ Please inform troops coming here that I look forward with pride to the honour of having Australian soldiers under my command in the field/’
Arrangements for the despatch of troops are progressing favorably. In addition to the Iberia, the steamer Australasian will probably be chartered as a transport.
The enrolment of the force is nearly completed ; it will consist in all of 734 officers and men, and 200 horses. (Received February 18, 1.15 a.m.) Melbourne, February 17.
The Victorian Government has offered 700 men, consisting of the Naval Brigade and Mounted Infantry, for service in the Soudan. If the Imperial Government accepts the offer, Parliament will be summoned to ratify it. Sailed, this afternoon, the Te Anau, for the Bluff.
