[SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE AGE.]
London, February 9. The Italian Government has offered to co-operate with Britain in suppressing the rebellion in Soudan and restoring order.
The Times in commenting upon the offer says that Britain’s prestige would be destroyed if a foreign power was now allowed to assist in bringing the Mahdi and his followers to obedience.
Rumours are still persistently circulated that General Gordon is alive, and that he has taken refuge in the Coptic Church in Khartoum.
February 10. It is now rumoured that Khartoum has not fallen into the hands of the rebels. The native tribes are friendly to the British, and discredit the report that the Mabdi’s troops have captured Khartoum. Lord Wolseley in a telegram to the Imperial Government admits the possibility of General Gordon having entrenched himself, and that the rebels may be in possession of the outer portion of Khartoum.
