Auckland, February 16. It was announced at the Hospital Committee meeting to-day that the house surgeon of the hospital declined to accept the recommendation of the committee that he should resign, and had applied to the Colonial Secretary for a commission of inquiry. The honorary medical visiting staff also forwarded a letter expressive of regret at the committee’s decision. The committee intend now to await the result of Government’s action or the outcome of the commission.

Simon O’Brien, aged 18, son of Mr O’Brien, contractor for the city tramway, was killed in the city baths on Saturday. The water was shallow, but not thinking of this he dived, striking his head on the bottom. At the inquest, a verdict of accidental death was returned. No blame was attached to anyone.

Wanganui, February 16. A carpenter named Jas. Harvey was drowned yesterday afternoon in Fleetwood Creek. He was bathing with a man named Nicholson. The latter swam down the creek a few yards, and on coming back he saw Harvey’s hands sticking up, and made an attempt to save him, but, as Nicholson was pulling him, Harvey let go. An inquest was held yesterday, and a verdict returned of drowned while bathing. Christchurch, February 16.

The bedy of a young woman named Helen Saye was found on Sunday at West Oxford, near the firm of Mrs Rerhau, where she had had been stay-

ing, and had left on January ]6. She was of weak health. On being missed a search party scoured the country without success for several days. Au inquest will be held.
