Wellington, February 15. About 38,000 valentines passed through the Wellington post office today.

About half-past three this afternoon a fatal accident occurred in the harbour. Four men went out in the yacht Diamond, and while off Oriental Bay the boat accidentally capsized and Alfred Urwln, one of the occupants, was drowned. Hrwin was about 18 years of age, and was assistant clerk in the New Zealand Times office. A passing boat went to the rescue and succeeded in picking up the other three occupants. Urwin’s body has not yet been recovered. Christchurch, February 15. On Friday morning Mr G, Rutherford, sen,, owner of the Leslie Hill station, Amuri, while crossing a plank over the creek near his house, fell into the water and was drowned. Deceased was 69 years of age. It has been decided to give a banquet to Sir Julius Yogel on the sth March. The Mayor has invited the citizens to close their places of business from noon to two o’clock on Monday as an expression of sorrow at the death of General Gordon. The Hon. E. Parker had a very narrow escape from being drowned while crossing the Waiau a few days ago. Dunedin, February 15. A fireman named Ebenezer Brown fell off his train near Goodwood yesterday. He was brought on to town, and taken to the hospital, where he died last night. The Hon. E. Richardson left by the express for the north on Saturday morning. The Hon. A, T. Stuart also left en route for Napier, a special carriage being placed at the disposal of his party. Mr Stead’s Ike has been scratched for all engagements at the Dunedin races. Lawrence, February 15. White, one of the men who was convicted of the manslaughter of William Meldrum at Nenthorne, was brought up at the City Police Court on Saturday, charged with behaving mutinously and riotously in gaol. As he promised to behave in future he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon.
