GILBERT STEWART.
Died February 5, 1885,
A stillness, unbroken In street and on highway, On main road and byeway, Of great grief gives token.
The silence and sadness O'er Kumara city, Denotes that deep pity That knoweth no gladness.
A true man has vanished ! A warm heart ceased beating. Tears flow on friends meeting All laughter is banished.
For Gilbert lies lowly— The genial, the good man ! Like the pine cut by woodman Fell he—suddenly, slowly !
And now is all ended ; The work and the worry— The toil and the hurry— And Rest comes, to mend it.
He has left us, for ever. Spread blue bells and roses Where Gilbert reposes— His like we'll see, never !
RICHARDSON RAE.
