WESTLAND SCHOLARSHIPS' EXAMINATION.
Eleven candidates presented themselves at Hokitika last week for examination. The examiners appointed were J. Giles, Esq., H. R. Rae, Esq., R. C. Reid, Esq., and J. Smith, Esq. (Inspector of Schools). The percentage of marks acquired, according to the regulations of the Board, is 60 per cent, out of the total—or 420 out of a possible 700. The first scholarship falls to " Spero," who is Master Gibson, son of Mr Joshua Gibson, of Hokitika. If the two scholarships are awarded, Master Hosking of the Kumara State School, whoso motto was " Ilemi," will take one, having gained the highest number of marks next to "Spero." Considering that Gibson is 15 years of age, and Alfred Hosking only 12 years and five months, the position which the latter has taken in the examination is by no means a secondary one, he being only 18 marks behind Gibson. Third comes Miss Jane Aune Seddon (motto " Energy"), 14J years of age. She acquitted herself exceedingly well, but broke down in a most mysterious manner in spelling and dictation. The following are the mottoes and the marks accorded :
It will be seen that "Spero" attained first place by the large number of marks he had over "Hemi" and "Energy" in Arithmetic; in every other subject, the two younger aspirants, one or other, defeated or tied him in marks. An analysis of the three highest totals shows that of the three " Energy " was first in History, and Writing, and tied in Geography and Composition. "Hemi" was first in Spelling and Dictation, Mental Arithmetic, and Grammar, and tied in Geography. The parents of the scholarship candidates from Kumaia State School, and their teacher Mr Woodward, may be congratulated on the success the young scholars achieved, which should now act as a stimulant to others who are. lising in tin: scale of scholastic progress. " J.'i iM'Veratice." was (lit- only candidate, who succeeded in scoring three figures in any <n.e subject.
