The funeral of Dr. Diver this afternoon was largely attended, both by residents of the city and the Volunteers, and the streets were lined with spectators. Napier, January 18. No clue has been found leading to the discovery of the parentage of the infant found dead on the beach. The inquest was accordingly adjourned. At the inquest on the body Charles Griffiths, who shot himself at Tarawera on Thursday, a verdict was returned that deceased died by his own hands while in a state of temporary insanity. A case of sticking up occurred early on Friday morning. A man named Watts, while returning home by Dickens street, was set upon by two men, who robbed him of eight notes. The robbers were arrested yesterday and remanded. Auckland, January 18. The present direct steam service arrangements have proved so unsatisfactory to the leading Auckland merchants that several leading firms have instructed their London agents to send shipments via Sydney. Yesterday afternoon an old man named Savage deliberately jumped into the Waikato river at Cambridge and was drowned, his body never rising out of the rapid current.
