Ross, January 16. A man oamed John Langdon cut his throat last night, and now lies at the hospital in a very precarious state. He had been drinking heavily all through the holidays.
Nelson, January 16. An inquest was held at Motueka on the body of F. Bisley, who was supposed to have committed suicide. There wa3 one of the witnesses deposed that at 7 a.m. he delivered a message to deceased from the Committee of the Oddfellows Lodge that he must meet i them at 8.30. Another witness deposed that deceased borrowed the loan of a gun to shoot ducks. In a gravel pit, about 8 o'clock, a report was heard and deceased was found immediately afterward shot through the heart. It was said that the gun might have been discharged accidentally, but the doctor thought otherwise. The verdict of the jury was that be died from a gun-shot wound. Deceased was, in addition to being schoolmaster, Secretary to the Oddfellows Lodge and of the Foresters Court. His balance sheets showed £4OO of the Foresters' money deposited in the bank, but the Oddfellows' ac couut is said to be some £3OO deficient. Dunedin, January 16. The bankruptcy of S. ELohn, jeweller, is announced. The total debts are £7406, and the assets £6021. The Presbyterian Synod lias decided to write a letter of condolence to the wife of the Rev. Mr Morice, recently drowned, and to take some notice of the conduct of the Maoris who rescued Mrs Morice. In the draughts tournament each player has played 48 games, leaving only 4to play to-ruorrow. At present Hqod, of Mount Somers, and Little, of Christchurcb, are a tie, with 32 wins each ; and Morris, of Invercargill, is third, with 31 ; Hay, of Dunedin, is fourth, with 26-|. Wellington, January 16. Dr. Diver, being surgeon of the Naval Brigade, will be given a military funeral, which takes place on Sunday. Napier, January 16. The body of a newly-born female child was found on the beach. The umbilical cotd was not tied, and the head was a good deal bruised. An inquest will be held. A young man named Griffiths, son of the proprietor of the Taupo coaches, shot himself yesterday as Tarawera. A short time since he was charged at the Resident Magistrate's Court with lunacy, but was discharged. Auckland, January 16. It is understood that Sir Julius Vogel is still continuing negotiations with the Imperial Government in the direction of urging it to act on its own account i3t Samoa, to the extent of at least securing the harbor or coaling station. John Marshall has purchased the racehorse Turquoise from Mr Vallance ' for 300 guineas.
