REINFORCEMENTS FOR TONQUIN. ORIENTAL BANK CORPORATION CLAIMS. SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE.

[special to press association. ] London, January 6. The British Government have extended the boundary line of their protectorate over New Guinea to the Huon Gulf, the southern boundary of the recent German annexation.

Sir Arthur Blyth, Agent-General for South Australia, has made representations to the Imperial authorities regarding the German annexation in New Guinea. Sir Saul Samuel, AgentGeneral for New South Wales, had an interview with Lord Derby, After a cabinet meeting Lord Derby assured him that the Government were unaware that France had annexed the New Hebrides.

January 7. General Lewal, the French Minister of War, will despatch 12,000 men to Tonquin as reinforcements. The health of Mr Gladstone is improving.

The German residents in New Britain have sent Home orders for the construction of two steamers.

Lord Derby has written a very se vere despatch to the German Government in connection with New Guinea.

Mr Thomas A. Wilton, the official assignee in the Oriental Bank Corporation estate, anticipates that he will probably be able to realise two and a half million pounds, and that dividends will be declared directly that certificates of claims are granted by the Court.

Mr Henry Gladstone states that his father’s health is gradually improving. Prince Albert Victor, eldest son of the Prince of Wales, attained his majority to-day. The festivities incidental to the occasion were conducted privately.

The New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited, have received the following cable message from the London office, dated London, 6th January, 1885 : Rangitikei has arrived in the Channel,

Sailed—Loch Linnhe, from Auckland j Colleen, for Lyttelton j and Dunscore, for Wellington and Taranaki. Loading—Sam Mendel, for Auckland, and Star of Greece, for Port Chalmers. Rangitikei will be loaded for Wellington and Timaru.
