The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 1885.

11l am - report yesterday of tlic Hospital Committee mooting the previous day, we inadvertently omitted to state the amount of money handed in to the Secretary, which was as follows ;—By Mr Ziegler, £2 10s ; by Mr Metcalfe, £2los: by Mr Hannah, £3 ; by Mr Burger, £7 ; Visitors to Hospital, 7s. Portions of two paragraphs were also omitted, which should have read as follows :

Mr Hope drew the attention of the Committee to the advisability of having a a polling-booth at Greenstone. [He said there would be no additional expense attached to the election.

It was then resolved that polling-booths lie opened at Kumava, Hillman s Town, and Greenstone ;] also that Mr Spyor act as Returning Ollicor at the election.

The words within brackets were inadvertently omitted. The monthly meeting of the Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the Town Hall last evening. A report will be given tomorrow. Two letters on Hospital matters are also held over.

The ladies who took an interest in and devoted so much of their time to the conduct and management of the Presbyterian bazaar, which through their efforts has proved a success, concluded their toils

by issuing invitations to a few lady and gentlemen friends to a party at the Masonic Hall last evening. The best violin and pianoforte music were procured, refreshments in over abundance were provided, and some twenty to thirty to thirty couples enjoyed right merry dances till a late hour this morning. At a meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board last evening for the purpose of appointing a Secretary to the Board and transacting other business, it transpired that there were eighteen applications. They were from Courtenay Smith, 0. K Leckie, J. P. Malcolm, W. B. Barkley, James Atkinson, F. W. Lahman, Munchin Keenan, Thomas Allen, and Charles N. Greenland, Greymouth; S. H. Pitt, Nelson ; Kobert Garriock, Waiuiate; John Alston, Lyttelton ; R J. Smith, Kumara; James Ingles, Lyell; Theodore Lechner, Auckland ; David Cochrane, Wangaratta; J. L. Dugan, Reefton; and P. Sinclair, Timaru. A large proportion of the applications were accompanied by references, testimonials, &c. On the motion of the Chairman (M. Kennedy, Esq.) it was resolved that the Secretary be appointed for twelve months, terminable by three months' on either side. The Board then went into committee to consider the applications, and on the motion of Mr Guinness, the names of all applicants except Greymouth candidates were struck out. After a number of votes had been taken, the candidates were reduced to two—Messrs Atkinson and Lahman. The Chairman then moved that Mr Atkinson be appointed Secretary to the Board. It was the expressed wish of the Government that the Board should find employment for Mr Atkinson, who occupied a position of trust for years, and one that required very considerable ability. The Chairman assumed that the Board did not wish to do any injustice to any man. He did not think the position was good enough for Mr Lahman, but it was good enough for Mr Atkinson. There could be no doubt as to Mr Lahman's qualifications for the oflice. No one could fill the position with greater ability, but he would prefer seeing Mr Atkinson selected.—Mr Sheedy proposed that Mr F. W. Lahman be appointed to the office, and dwelt at considerable length on Mr Lahman's undoubted qualifications for it. He laid great stress upon the fact that Mr Lahman was a very old fellow townsman, one who had shared the fortunes of the place, like the rest of them, for a long number of years.—Mr Kerr seconded, and bore testimony as to the ability of the candidate..— After some discussion as to the time the Secretary should give to the Board, Mr Guinness said that upon the understanding that the Secretary should give his whole time to the Board, he would support the amendment. The amendment was then put and carried by 4 against 2. The Chairman and Mr Thomas voted for Mr Atkinson, and Messrs Kerr, Sheedy, Guinness, and Hon. H. H. Lahman for the successful candidate.—Mr Lahman briefly returned thanks for the honor conferred upon him. Preliminary notice is given of a concert and dramatic entertainment in the Adelphi Theatre, on Friday, 6th February, for the benefit of Mrs O'Grady whose husband has for some time been an inmate of the Sea View Lunatic Asylum Hokitika, when it is hoped sufficient funds will be raised to enable Mrs O'Grady to join her friends in Otago. A dramatic entertainment will be given in the Theatre Royal on Monday, 2nd March, in aid of Holy Trinity Church Sunday School, on which occasion "The Sea of Ice," or "The Thirst for Gold," will be produced. A fourth share in the Austrians' sluicing claim at Hayes Terrace is offered for sale. It is a fine property, as it includes machinery for a stone lift, water-races, and dams, and an almost unfailing supply of water, which renders it one of the most remunerative claims in the district. The Flying Dutchman has arrived, and will hold Dutch auction sales to-morrow and Saturday evenings, at Mr S. S. Pollock's store in Main street.
