London, January 6. The Admiralty deny that any orders have, been given to the Channel Squadron out of the ordinary course. Tenders (or the Auckland loan of of £25,000 were opened yesterday. The tenders amounted altogether to £117,000. Tenders at £IOB 17s 6d will receive 21 per cent.; tenders above that amount will be allotted in full. (Received January 7, 1.15 p.m.) Evening. It is state! that’ Spain has annexed territory on the west coast (? west coast of Africa) lying between Capes Moreton and Oeste.
(Received January 6, 10.5 p.m.) Capetown, January 5. Intelligence has been received here that the Gosbeunes (? Goshens, or Boer inhabitants of Goschen) are collecting arms, and it is believed they intend to forcibly oppose Colonel Warren's advance into Bechuanaland, and that fighting will take place between the Gosbeunes and the British troops. [special to press association.] London, January 2. The Daily News, in an article on the Pacific question, commends the prudence displayed in the matter by the Government of New South Wales. Mr Murray Smith, Agent-General for Victoria, has forwarded to Lord Derby the protests made by the Victorian and Tasmanian Governments against the annexation of the northern portion of New Guinea by Germany. The Hod. J. B. Thurston, Colonial Secretary of Fiji, has arrived here.
