Wednesday, Decembek 31. The weather was very unfavourable for the races to-day; rain came dowu in torrents. The course was very heavy and wet, and in front of the grand stand it was ankle deep in mud. About 800 people were on the grouud. OMOTinioTU Handicap, 25sovs. One mile. Wratl's blk ni Hinemoa, 6 years, 9st. 23b 1 FurniYs br ni Lady Ellen, aged Sst. 2 Peake's blk m Maggie, aged, 7st. Bft. ... 3 Straker's b c Cockfield Putter, 4 years, 6st. 71b. ... 0 Jones's b h Cardigan (late Hero), aged, Sst. 6ft. ... ' 0 Martin's b m Crazy Jane, 3 years. Gst. m 0 All came to the post. Hinemoa won easily. £l3B was put through the totalisator ; dividend, £1 13s. Hack Race, lOsovs. Three quarters of a mile; heats. Five entered for this .event, as follows : Mr Mills's No Name, Mr Russell's Cob, Mr Thoroughgood's Native Cat, Mr Foley's Brian Born, and Mr Cameron's Tolly. van well, but the mare was the swiftest of foot, winning both heats with tolerable ease. Polly won by a neck, Brian Boru second, and Native Cat third. £145 passed through the totalisator; dividend, £2 4s. Midsummer Handicap ; SOsovs. Two miles. Second horse to receive 10 sovs. from stake. . Thoroughgood's b h Volunteer, aged, 9at. Ift 1 Bradley's b c Wanderer (late Carlton), 3 years, 7st. 13Tb 2 Only these two started. Notwitstanding the heavier weight, Volunteer won, hands down. . The amount put through the totalisator was £216 ; dividend, £1 14s. Railway Stakes, 30sovs. One mile and a-half. This fell through, only two accepting up to the aunounced time, and a resolution was passed refusing any more entries. Flying Handicap ; 20sovs. Three quarters of a mile. The second day's racing took place to-day, with beautiful weather, and the course in very fair order. About 1400 were present. The totalisator was well patronised. Hurdle Handicap, 30 sovs. Two miles. Freeth's gr g Lillipie, aged, lOst. 3ft. ... 1 Peake's br m Birdie, aged, 9st. ... 2 H. Cameron's gr g Harkaway, 6 years, 9sfc. 10ft. 3 J. Clarke's blk m Levant, aged, list. 2ft 0 All the jumps were taken cleauly until the last, at which Harkaway stumbled and threw his rider, thus losing second place. Lillipie took all the jumps very cleanly and came in a very easy winner. In totalisator, £182; dividend £1 16s. Hack Race; 10 sovs. Three-quarters of a mile; heats, without dismounting. Mr Russell's Cob ... 1 Mr Foley's Brian Boru 2 Mr Miles's No Name 3 This was a great boil over. No Name was the favorite, and so little was thought of Cob that only £3 was put on him. Cob won both heats easily. In totalisator, £81; dividend, £lB 6s. Grey Valley Stakes, 50 sovs. One and three-quarter miles. Second horse to receive 5 sovs from stakes. Thoroughgood's b h Volunteer, aged, 9st. 6ft 1 Jones' b h Cardigan (late Hero), j aged, 9st sft 2 Bradley's b c Wanderer (late Carl- j ton), 3 years ... ... 3 Seven entered for the race, but only three accepted. Volunteer was the favorite, though Cardigan had a good many friends. Volunteer won as he liked without a touch from whip or spur, though Cardigan ran very gamely. In the totalisator, £407; dividend, £2 Is. Handicap Hudle Race; 10 sovs. One and a quarter miles. Won by Bob Ridley, although he only came second. Crazy Jane, who was first, had run inside the post, but before this was known the money in the totalisator was paid away. In totalisator, £230; dividend, £6 lis. Brunner Stakes Handicap ; 30 sovs. One and a-half miles. Second horse to receive 5 sovs. from stakes. There were nine entries but only three accepted, and, to the mortification and disgust of a good many, Cardigan was scratched at the last moment, leaving only Hinemoa and Maggie in ; and although the former carried 9st. 4ft. against the hitter's 6st. 121 b., the race proved a- gift to Hinemoa, which could apparently have won with another stone on her. In totalisator, £192; divided, £1 4s.
