PROVINCIAL NEWS.
[united press association.] Napier, December 19. Cook, the sub-editor of the Daily Telegraph, had a narrow escape from drowning this morning. While having a morning swim in the sea, he found he was carried out by the current. After a long and unsuccessful effort to reach the shore, he cried out for assistance, and heard by Mr Millar, gaoler, who ran down the hill to the police station, and procured a life buoy and rope. Amongst others attracted to the beach was Mr Fred R. Howard, of the post office, who seized a buoy aud swam out and succeeded in placiug it over Cook's head, just as he was sinking for the third time. Ho was then hauled ashore by a rope. Cook had been in the water about three-quarters of an hour before he was rescued. He was carried home, where he now remains in a weak condition,
Wanganui, December 19. A storeman named Wm. T. Edire was drowned in the Wanganui river this afternoon. He had gone to bathe, and is supposed to have been seized with cramp. He was much respected, and leaves a wife and five children. Masterton, December 19. Charles Osborne, son of an npper plain settler, was killed yesterday at Mungapakiha by falling off the shaft of a loaded dray, the wheel of which passed over his body. Dunedin, December 19. At Port Chalmers last night the daughter of Stewart, schoolmaster at Lower Harbor, fell into the fire and was considerably burned. She is of weak intellect.
