THE TICHBORNE CLAIMANT.
The Claimant has taken a furnished house at near Southampton. His wife and two illegitimate children are to be removed from the South Shoreham Workhouse. The Claimant in a letter to the Times signed " R. C. D, Tichborne," and dated Nov. 3, writes:—"How Thomas Cresswell could swear that "William Cresswell who I know is Arthur Orton, is his brother I don't know. Both Edmund Orton and Charles Orton have sworn that he is their brother, and when I was shown his photograph I at once recognised it as that of Arthur Orton, who I knew in Australia. Besides tbat, Thomas Cresswell told several persons in London before he went to Australia that he could not recognise the photograph and that be should not be able to recognise the man even if he were his brother, because he was nine years his senior and saw very little of him in his youth. ' William Cresswell ' told the governor of the prison in Australia in 1871 that his real name was Arthur Orton, and also a widow of the name of Mrs Clarke, whom he married. Thomas Cresswell has always alleged that his brother William was entitled, if alive, to a large estate at Strathfieldsaye, which he would get in the event of William's death or lunacy. Yet it appears-for years past he has known of this man being in Australia, and yet has made no effort to get him here. We shall see whether he will venture to bring him now." It appears that at the hearing before the Primary Judge, in Sydney, in September last, the Judge ordered that in the interests of justice he should order the lunatic to be taken specially by a photographer with the Ortons, and again with Thomas Cresswell.
