Pedestrians are reminded that nominations for the Kumara Handicap Foot Race, prizes amounting to 20 guineas, must be made to Mr H. Burger (Treasurer of the Sports Committee) by 10 o’clock to-morrow night, 17th inst. The Hospital Committee hold their usual fortnightly meeting at the Town Hall this evening. There are three important matters to be dealt with, viz., tenders for next six months’ supplies, applications for secretaryship, and the consideration of Mr Campbell’s notice of motion—“ That the resolution passed at the last special meeting giving Dr. Monckton three months’ notice be rescinded, the same being illegal.” The Pacific Mail steamship Australia arrived at Auckland yesterday afternoon, with the San Francisco mail.
It is expected that the East and West Coast Railway question will be settled in a day or two.
Commander Edwin wired an “urgent” last evening before 8 o’clock—“ Bad weather may be expected between north and east and south-east; glass further fall.” And at 11.43 this morning—“ Bad weather may be expected between north and west and south-west; glass rising within 12 hours,”
Written tenders will be received by the Mines Department for the following work in connection with the sludge-channel—-(l) delivery of paving stone, (2) paving, (3) extension, (4) keeping channel clear—four separate and distinct contracts. They must be addressed to the Hon. the Minister of Mines, Kumara, before noon of Wednesday, the 24th inst., and must be marked on the outside what the tender is for. Specifications and general conditions can be seen at the Mines Office, Kumara.
A small rush is reported to have taken place yesterday to ground between the Hauhau and Blue Spur. There is, so far (the Times states), not reason to believe that the discovery is more than a patch. A few miners from Rirau and Kanieri have visited the ground. Three nominations for the vacant seat in the Hokitika Borough Council were received by the Town Clerk yesterday. These were Messrs C. Horgan, H. Parker, and E. J. T. Price. The polling day is fixed for the 22nd inst. The first meeting of the Greymouth Harbor Board was held at the Town Hall, Greymouth, yesterday, at noon, the following members being present:—Hon. H. H. Lahman, A. R. Guinness, Esq., M.H.R., Messrs Dupre (Mayor), D. Sheedy, and James Kerr. Mr F, W. Lahman was appointed Secretary pro tern. On the motion of Mr Guinness, seconded by the Hon. H. H. Lahman, Mr Martin Kennedy was delared elected Chairman of the Harbor Board for the ensuing twelve months. On the motion of Mr Dupre, seconded by Mr Sheedy, it was resolved that applications for the position of Secretary to the Board at a salary of £250 per annum, be advertised in both Greymouth papers, the West Coast Times, Inangahua Herald, and Kumara Times. The applications are to be sent in by the 7th January, 1885. The Flying Dutchman will not submit anything by auction to-morrow, as announced, but will do so on Monday next, 22nd inst., when he will dispose of men’s and boys’ suits, boots, drapery of every kind, and fancy goods. Webbs’ Royal Marionette Company have arranged to perform in Greymouth, from Saturday evening next through the whole of the Christmas week, terminating on Saturday, December 27.
