WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Council met at half-past two o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Council Chambers, Hokitika; present— The Chairman (J. Griramond, Esq.), Messrs Dungan, Jack, Spence, Clarke, Daly, and M'Goldrick. The following business pertaining to this part of the county is extracted from the West Coast Times:— CORRESPONDENCE. Letter from the Secretary Mines Department, stating that sums £373 6s 8d and £333 6s 8d had been placed at the disposal of the Council, for the construction of tracks from the Kanieri to Humphreys Gully and Larrikins to Loopline ; the Council to find one third of the money, and plans to be approved by the Chief Surveyor.—Received.— Messrs Jack and Clarke referred to the Ions; time some contractors were in completing works. Letter from Mr J. Stephens, Goldsborough, declining to accept eight shillings per day for hire of a horse to work the Tiffin Borer, he having received ten shillings last month.—Received and referred to the Finance Committee.

Letter from Under-Secretary Public Works Department, respecting the applications of Council for money under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, and enclosing remarks of the District Engineer on the Christchurch road deviation.—Received.—Mr Dungan said that work must be carried out, and the Government should assist, as it was a colonial work.

Letter from the Town Clerk, Kumara, asking co-operation in urging the Government to establish a Home for Old Men on the West Coast.—Received. —Mr Seddon supported the proposal.—Mr Grimraond suggested that old women should be added. He thought it selfish to provide a Home for Old Men only.—Mr Jack was about to make the same observation.—Finally it was resolved to cooperate with other local bodies in the manner proposed. Messrs Seddon and M'Whirter here took their seats.

GREENSTONE ROAD FENCE,

Mr M'Whirter moved, "That Mr Kerr be instructed to have a fence erected along the dangerous portion of the old Greenstone road."—Mr Seddon seconded the motion, which was carried after a short discussion. BIG DAM TRACK. Mr M'Whirter moved, "That tenders be invited by next meeting for the construction of track from Big Dam to Fox's, in accordance with plans and specifications now on table." This road could not be used now. There was no road in Westland wanted repairing so much as this, and there was a population in Fox's and Greek's—Mr Dungan seconded. It had already been admitted by the Council that the work was necessary, and it had been repeatedly referred to by the overseer. Mr Clarke said that the Council should spend their surplus money in openin" up new tracks. There was a "ood show for gold to be got at the Waihinihini and other places. He would like to see people settled in new places.—The motion was carried. RAILWAYS. The Chairman moved, « That in the opinion of this Council the Arthur Pass route for the East and West Coast Eailway is in every respect the best route for Westland aud the colony, and that the Government be respectfully urged to adopt that route."—Mr Seddon seconded the r.-s■•ihi'i mi, which was carried unanimously.

Mr Seddon. by leave moved, that the Minister of Public Works lie requested to have the Hokitika-Grey Railway put in hand at once.—Mr M'Whirter seconded the motion, which was agreed to. COMMITTEES. The Chairman moved, "That the following members constitute the Public Works Committee of this Council for the ensuing year, namely, Messrs M'Goldrick, Daly. M'Whirter, and Spence, and that Mr M'Goldrick be chairman of said committee."—Mr Seddon moved that the Council go into committee to consider the resolution.— Mr M'Whirter seconded the reso'ution which was carried—The Council accordingly went into committee, when the following committees were appointed :—Public Works Committee : Messrs M'Goldrick (chairman), Seddon, Daly, Clarke, and M'Whirter; Finance Committee ; Messrs Spence (chairman), Daly. Dungan, and Seddon. The Council adjourned at six until seven p.m.
