LOSS OP THE STEAMER DOCHARD. THIRTY OF THE CREW DROWNED,

THE FRENCH IN TONQUIN. REPORTED RETREAT OF THE CHINESE. (Received December 9, 12.40 p.m.) London, December 8. News has been received here of the loss of the steamer Docbard, near Holyhead, on the north Welsh coast. The crew, numbering 30 are drowned. The vessel was bound from Cork to Rotterdam.

A despatch to hand from Tonquin states that desultory fighting has occurred between the French forces and Chinese troops. The French have been generally successful, and the Chinese are now retreating in consequence of the defeat inflicted upon them.
