Auckland, December 2
A brutal outrage on a woman was made shortly after 12 o’clock last night by three young men. Two of them in turn held their hands over her mouth, while she was criminally assaulted. The assault took place in a paddock near the railway station. The woman’s screams were heard by a constable, who arrested one of the men named Austin Tyrell. The others, John Arthur Cotton and William Peacock have since been arrested.

The arrangements for carrying out a direct service with Great Britain have now been satisfactorily settled, and the first steamers will leave Great Britain and New Zealand on the 20th instant. The postal difficulty which existed with the Home authorities respecting the dispatch of letters has been adjusted. Mr Stout’s absence will extend over some weeks. Sir J. Vogel will leave for the hot springs in a fortnight. It is stated that the Government has recently issued fresh instructions to the various immigration agents as to the terms upon which the nominations of immigrants will be received. Government will fulfil all existing obligations, but no further nominations of single women will be entertained for the pre-
sent. In the case where a husband is in the colony, whose wife and family are at home, the latter may be nominated on payment of the undermentioned sums : —For the wife’s passage, £7 10s ; outfit, £1; for the passage of each child, ,£4 10s; outfit of each 10s. William Bishop, an old resident, and formerly agent for M'Meckan, Blackwood, and Co., died to-day.
Hearn leaves for Riverton on Monday next. . A seven-roomed house occupied by Louis Davies, sharebroker, was destroyed by fire at 9.45 this evening.
Balclutha, December 2
Frank Morton, carpenter, of Dunedin, who has been working here for some months, disappeared yesterday under circumstances which lead to the suspicion that he has been drowned in the river.
Dunedin, December 2. The sum of £14,379 was put through the totalisator yesterday.
Blenheim, December 2
A boy five years old, son of the master of the schooner Onward, loading at Kaituna, in the Sounds, near Havelock, was drowned yesterday. He was last seen fishing off the punt. The body has not yet been recovered. Christchurch, December 2.
Mr Edward Wakefield, addressed a crowded meeting at Leeston Town Hall last night, speaking for two hours and a-half. Though at first coldly received, and even hissed, he carried the meeting with him, and was accorded a vote of thanks and renewed confidence by a very large majority.
