[to the editor.] Sir—According to your report of Mr Byrne's speech on Friday night at Dillman's, and as appearing in your issue of Saturday evening, the following statement appears : —"£4so was put down for the Chairman's visit down south." Now, sir, I feel called upon to state that the assertion is false, from beginning to end, as the " Chairman's visit down south" did not exceed in the way of expense the small amount of £45 —that is, £35 for the Chairman's expenses, and £lO for the hire of a horse. Ido expect Mr Byrne to acknowledge and correct so gross a misstatement of facts.—l am, sir, yours, P. DUNGAN. Kumara, Nov. 10, 1884. [Mr Byrne did correct the statement at his meeting at the Adelphi Theatre on Saturday night. It was a typographical error occasioned by the omission of several words, which should have read £450 was put down for (sundries, amongst which, possibly, was) the Chairman's visit down south." The words in parenthesis were omitted. The error was ours, not Mr Byrne's and by no means intentional.— Ed. K. T.]
