The Dillman's Town Telephone Office was opened to-day, and is therefore now in telegraphic communication with all places mentioned in the New Zealand Postal and Telegraph Guide with Europe, Asia, Africa, America, and Australasia. In reference to the Westland Education District Subdivision Bill, the Times reports that " A telegram was received yesterday from Wellington, addressed to Messrs Rae and Jack, Hokitika, informing them that the Legislative Council had, by a large majority, forced the adoption of the clauses appointing Commissioners to take charge of the two educational districts at Hokitika and Grey mouth, in spite of the strong opposition of Messrs Bonar, Seddon, and Bevan. The message stated that the House of Representatives would most probably disagree with the Council's amendments, and that a conference would, in all likelihood, be appointed to deal with the question. On receiving this information, a circular was sent round convening a meeting and a large number of those interested in educational matters assembled at the County Chambers last evening, the Mayor in the chair. Resolutions were passed disapproving of the amendments proposed by the Council, and urging upon Messrs Bonar, Seddon, and Bevan to endeavour to have substituted the appointment of a district Board for Westland, as the continuance of a superintending Commissioner with present powers, was most unsatisfactory." A telegram to that effect was forwarded to the members for the district this morning. The performance given at the Theatre' Royal last night by Miss Carry Nelson and Mr M'Fadyen was fairly attended. The programme consisted of the comediettas "Married Bliss," " Cindei-ella," and "The Soldier's Daughter," and Miss Nelson proved herself a very clever and charming actress, and, in addition to her dramatic powers, she is also possessed of a very sweet and pleasing voice, her songs being received with great favor. Mr M'Fadyen gave occasional recitations, and altogether an agreeable evening's amusement was afforded. We noticed that in the advertisement and bills Miss Nelson was to be supported by her " Comic Operetta Company," which, we presume, was a delicate way of announcing that Miss Nelson is a host in herself. At all events, the Company, in the meaning usually attached to the word, wore
not forthcoming. An entire change of programme is announced for this evening. Mr Hannan's meeting at Callaghan's last evening was attended by almost all the electors in that portion of the district. Mr Stephen Honey was voted to the chair. After the candidate had explained his views on county matters, and answered several questions, on the motion of Mr Bernsen, seconded by Mr Steele, it was unanimously resolved that Mr Hannan was a fit and proper person to represent the Arahura Eiding in the Westland County Council. The barque Clyde, which left Dunedin on Wednesday from Lyttelton (with part of original cargo from Mauritius) has become a total wreck at Horse Shoe Bay, near Akaroa south heads, with the loss of 18 lives. It is Worth a Trial. —"I was troubled for many years with kidney complaint, gravel, &c, my blood became thin, I was dull and inactive, could hardly crawl about, and was an old worn-out man all over, and could get nothing to help me until I got Hop Bitters, and now my blood and kidneys are all right, and I am as active as a man of thirty, although I am seventy-two, and I have no doubt it will do as well for others of my age. It is worth the trial."—(Father.) Notice Not a Beverage.—" They are not a beverage, but a medicine, with curative properties of the highest degree, containing no poisonous drugs. They do not tear down an already debilitated system, but build it up. One bottle contains more real hop strength than a barrel of ordinary beer. Physicians prescribe them."
