THE GOAT NUISANCE.

[to the editor.] Sir —ln your issue of Thursday last there appears a letter signed “C. P. Holmes,” in which he complains of the goat nuisance and their incursions on his garden, in consequence of which he was (no doubt reluctantly) obliged to impound those animals. But his principal grievance is that your humble servant, whom he designates as the Inspector, declined to accept his assistance to prosecute the owners of those pests, or in other words to identify myself with his little game. He finds those animals in his garden ; he takes custody of them ; places them in the pound; and during this process they are clearly beyond my reach, and not at large. But when the owner releases his goats and pays Mr Holmes his no doubt moderate demand, he rushes to me and says—“ Look here ! those goats have been released, and you must now prosecute the owner, I will help you out of the difficulty by doing the necessarily harmless swearing, and the matter will be settled.” Now suppose I started in this line, in company with Mr Holmes, and that we prospered so far as to have a couple of cases per week, at 10s each case, it will be seen that Mr Holmes, instead of killing the goose for the golden egg, would be in a measure killing the dull times. I fancy that my objection to this little arrangement is the real grievance; but Mr Holmes seems to have forgotten it. I have impounded a dozen of those pests within the last couple of weeks, and I intend to continne the raid until they become a nuisance to the owners as well as the public. Apologising for occupying so much of your valuable space—l remain, your obedient servant, John Monahan. Kumara, November 1, 1884.
