A most destructive fire occurred today in one of the principal streets of Moscow, causing the total destruction of eighty shops. The Times states that another engagement has takeu place at Tamsui between the French and Chinese forces. The latter lost 3000, while the Freuch loss was trifling. It is considered improbable that the Federation Enabling Bill will be introduced during the autumn session as expected, the English Government having been informed that the New South Wales Parliament desire to discuss the measure prior to its introduction.

October 18. The retail butchers in London are paying a higher price for New Zealand mutton than for English mutton. The several Agents-General met on Monday to discuss the various questions to be brought forward at the forthcoming interview with Lord Derby. In an article on the Colonial defences the Times says that England ought to take the initiative respecting the defence of the Australian ports, and with a little assistance the colonial navy could be converted into a powerful auxiliary.
