"SWEEPS" AND THE POST OFFICE.
The Wellington correspondent of the Press, under date October 15, writes : An interesting "sporting return" has just been laid before the Legislative Council, if it is not a breach of privilege to use such a term in regard to a document presented to such an august body. It is a statement of the total number and amount of the money orders issued by the Post Office during the months of June and July, 1884, in favor of various promoters and sweeps in the colony. It appears that altogether 342 orders, to the amount of £392, were issued, distributed a 3 follows:—" Adamastor," four orders, £3; " Phoenix," three orders, £2 ; « one hundred and sixty-six orders, £189; "Fortuna," fifty-orders, £62; "Leo," one order, £2; "Robin Hood;" seventytwo orders, £6O; "Jubal Fleming," two orders, £1 ; "Adam Bede," forty orders, £73. No orders were issued in favor of "James Jacobsen," "John Smith," or " Here's Luck." The return was moved for by the Hon. MiHart, and it is to be hoped some of the sweep promoters will be duly grateful to him for the advertisement.
