The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1884.

A public meeting is called by his Worship the Mayor, to take place at the Theatre Royal, this evening, for die purpose of considering the resolutions passed at the meeting of the parliamentary Goldfields Committee on Monday last relative to the petitions re Kumara sludge-channel and water-race. These resolutions were forwarded to us '>y our Welliugtou correspondent and

appeared in the Kumaba Times on the evening of the same day, so that our readers are fully acquainted with their purport. jtfßriefly staled, the Goldfields Committee tecommend that the Kumara sludge-channel and water-races should be vested in the Westland County and Kumara Borough Councils, or in a Trust similar to that of the Mount Ida water-race. The Goldfields Committee sit again to-morrow morning. It is evident from the wording of the resolutions that the Committee desire an expre.ssion of opinion from ihe Councils; and this was intimated in a telegram from Mr Seddon to his Worship the Mayor, also on Monday last. Then again, Mr Vincent Pyke, chairman of the Goldfields, last evening telegraphed to Mr Hannan (the Mayor) as follows: Report of Committee held over till Friday. Please inform me whether satisfactory in present shape, or if any modification is desired, of what nature. —V. Pyke. The County Council at their meeting yesterday resolved to inform Mr Seddon that that the Council were not prepared to agree to take over the Government water-race until further particulars were to hand. His Worship the Mayor has, very properly we think, called a public meeting to-night, inviting burgesses and miners to attend, and express an opinion. We believe the creation of a Trust independent of the County or Borough Councils would be the best for regulating the use, working, and management of the sludgechannel and water-races.
