THE CHESS HANDICAP TOURNAMENT.
The chess handicap tournament is so far concluded as that the winners', especially the fi'-st two, have come ont in a very decided manner to the fore. There were only nine actual competitors, viz., Dr. Monckton, Messrs Wiesner, Holst, Ist class ; Nicholaison, Thorne, Pierson, 2nd class ; Sampson, R. E. Wylde, 3rd class; and Dennett, 4th class; hut some of these retired early in the contest. Each competitor was to play every other competitor two games. Mr Sampson has now won 16 out of a possible 18, and will take first prize; Mr Wiesner 13 games, second prize; and Mr Wylde the third prize. The prizes are small in amount, and were arranged pro rata to the entries, the stakes being 2s 6d each. The tournament was held more with a view to revive the game than for offering or contesting for valuable prizes. Four to seven years ago chess was very popular in Kuniara. In May 1830, there were 37 competitors took l-'art in a handicap tournament. Thong], several of cur best players have left the district, there are still a number who possess the same amount of skill, and there are all the elements for the composition of a strong team, club, or tournament.
