WESTPORT AND GREYMOUTH HARBOUR BILLS.
Mr Seddon seems to have acted in a similar manner in the matter of the Westport and Grey mo nth Harbour Bills. The Welling! on correspondent of the Grey River Argus telegraphed on Wednesday as follows : Last evening Sir J. Yogel moved that the Standing Orders be suspended so that the Westport and Greymouth Harbour Bills could be read a second time without being referred to and reported upon by the Local Bills Committee. Before the question could be put by the Speaker, it was necessary for him to count if there were twothirds of the members present. The Speaker counted twice and found there was just the exact number present, and was about to put the question, when Mr Seddon rose and commenced to speak against the motion, and urged that Government had not laid a return before the House which he had asked for, showing the expenditure on the railway harbour works, &c,, at Grey and Buller. He continued to talk until some of the members left the House, and then Mr Seddon sat down. The Speaker then said he could not put the question. Sir Julius had consequently to pospone these Harbour Bills till Tuesday. Mr Seddon’s opposition caused great surprise, and the reason is quite apparent.
