PROVINCIAL NEWS.

[united press association.]

Wanganui, September 30.

The libel case, Russel v. M'Minn and M'Kelvie, in which plaintiff claims £IOOO damages is now on. Plaintiff was a J.P., and was the editor of the Manawatu Times, defendants are proprietors and editor of Manawatu Standard. The libel alleged plaintiff made indecent proposals to Miss Louise Crawford, actress, and a native woman. Miss Crawford stated in her evidence that plaintiff had attended supper with actresses, and that after supper, when going home, she found the door locked and he then made proposals. Constable Gillespie gave evidence that he had made inquiries as to the rumors, but did not take any steps, and that plaintiff hearing of the inquiries took steps to have him shifted, and he was consequently transferred to Feilding.

Auckland, September 30,

The Rev. A. Reid, of Pitt-street Wesleyan Church, on Sunday, in the course of the morning service made startling remarks, specially bearing upon members of the General Assembly, whom people have placed in office, and were found yesterday Sabbath excursioning in the Government steamer Hinemoa, to visit bays and harbors of New Zealand. He anticipated that some such course as befel the isolated of old on account of their national sin would most assuredly fall upon New Zealand, owing to such an outrageous desecration of the Lord's Day. He hinted that the people should rise en masse and denounce such a procedure as detrimental to the true interests of the colony.
