Further intelligence has been received from Khartoum confirming the telegram received from that town on the 1 1 th inst. The latest despatch states that General Gordon twice inflicted a defeat upon the rebels, and repulsed them with heavy loss, compelling them to retire and to raise the siege of Khar-
touoi. The retreat of the followers of El Mahdi took place on August 30, since which time General Gordon has held complete command of the approaches to Khartoum and the surrounding country. The notification by Nubar Pasha that the Egyptian Government intend to resume the full control of the finances of the country, in violation of the law of liquidation, has been strongly objected to by Egyptian, creditors, and protests have already been made by the Austrian, French, and German Governments against the suspension of the Caisse de La Dette Publique, on account of the deficit which occurred in the Egyptian National Budget. New York, September 20. A sharp shock of earthquake occurred to-day in the western States. The disturbance was experienced over a large tract of country, and a large number of buildings are damaged, but no loss of life has yet been reported.

London, September 17. An Hawaiian who has been studying at Naples was seized with the cholera, which terminated fatally. Sir Stafford Northcote's speeches in Midlothian have been well received.
Intending tenderers complain of the delay in deciding the price of the New South Wales Loan.
The frozen meat ex Raapehu is realising 5d per t>. The wool sales have closed with firm rates. A steadiness of prices has been maintained throughout the sales, inferior and ordinary wools remaining at the June closing rates ; good qualities sd, and crossbreds generally a Jd to Id higher. There were principally home buyers ; 330,000 bales were catalogued. The withdrawals amount to 25,500 bales.
September 18. General Gordon reproaches the British Government for causing the present evils in the Soudan, and states that he intends to burn Berber and surrender the Soudan to the Sultan of Turkey when the Turkish troops arrive.
Tho Republiqoe Francaise predicts that Imperial federation will eventually ruin England. General Gordon has defeated the rebels at Halfies (sic). King Leopold of Belgium refuses to veto the School Bill.
The cholera in Naples is gradually abating.
