GREY COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Grey County Council was held at the County offices, Graymouth, last evening; present— Crs. Clifford (chairman pro tern.), Warren, M'Kechnie, Parfitt, Taylor, Marshall, and Ryall. GOLD DUTY. A telegram was read from the County Chairman stating that he could not attend the Council that evening, but asking the Council to agree to a petition to both branches of the Legislature to abolish the gold duty. The Chairman said that as he had always held the gold duty tax to be a class tax that was most unfair if not iniquitous, he hoped the Council would ouce more put its opinion on record

that it was strongly opposed to such a class tax. Cr. Warren moved that the Council is unanimous in adopting a petition to the Legislature praying that the gold duty be abolished.—Carried without a dissentient voice. TENDERS. The Council then dealt with tenders. For the construction of cribwork aud embankment on Hohonu road the following tenders were received : Kyrou Hanlon, £66 10s; O'Donnell Bros., £63; O'Donnell and Lutgens, £B2 10s; Coleman Hvnes, £53 ; Frank Whyte, £9B; Thomas Waugh, £55. As the amount of deposit in Coleman Hynes' contract was insufficient, some discussion ensued as to whether Hynes' tender—the lowest—be accepted. Cr. Parfitt moved that the tender of Coleman Hynes be accepted. It was very easy to make a mistake of that kind. The Chairman said as he had always held an informality to be fatal to a tender he moved as an amendment that the next lowest tender be accepted. Cr. Marshall supported the motion. The Chairman then put the amendment, which was carried by 4 again3t 3. The tender of Thos. Waugh was then accepted. ROAD OVERSEER. Applications were ordered to be invited for a permament Road Overseer. ENCROACHMENT OF GREENSTONE CREEK ON MAIN ROAD. Cr. Foley said if the Council did not do something at once to stop the encroachment of the Greenstone Creek on the main road tbey would probably have shortly to pay £l5O, while £2O spent now would save that expenditure. It was resolved to spend between £ls and £2O in scrub and stone to save the main road.
