WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.

The County Council met in the Chambers, Hokitika, yesterday afternoon ; present—The County Chairman (P. Dungan, Esq.), Messrs Jack, Camming, Grimmond, Rose, M'Goldrickt Hirter, and MWhirter. The Times reports:—

A letter was received from Mr P. Quinn, Arahura, stating that he had used his vehicles in conveying passengers and mails, and had often cleared the main road in time of floods without receiving any compensation.—Received. Mr M £ Whirter thought Mr Qninn was entitled to some consideration. He moved that the sum of £5 be voted to Mr Quinn.

Mr M'Goldrick seconded. Mr Rose thought the footbridge should be extended.

Mr Griramond thought notice of motion should be given. It was a bad precedent to vote money on a letter. He had no objection to the amount, and believed it was fairly earned. After some little discussion the matter was referred to the Engineer to report.

Letter from the Mayor of Kumara, giving notice that the east boundary track between the county and borough was in au impassable state, and that the borough intended to repair the track under clause 186 of the Municipal Corporations Act.—Received and referred to the Engineer. Letter from the Secretary of Kumara Hospital applying for the usual sub-sidy.-—Referred to the Finance Committee.

Mr M'Whirler presented a petition from the residents of Stafford.

The Chairman read a long report of his visit to the sou 1 hern district of the county, after v.h.c,. ojveiai tenders

opened and dealt with ; and at about ten o’clock the meeting lapsed for want of a quorum.
