LIGHTHOUSE AT THE FRENCH PASS.
The Nelson Mail of the 26th ulfc. thns refers to this now structure : " The lighthouse which is being erected at the French Pass is now nearlr finished, and the light will probably be lit for the first time in another week or two. The tower is situated at the the extreme end of the point on the southern side of the " narrows," and, although not of any great height, is most substantially built. The light to be exhibited will not be a very brilliant one, as all that is required is something to show the end of the main land. At present this is often very difficult to discover at night time, as on account of the peculiar formation of the coast dark shadows are thrown upon the water which prove veey deceiving. A short distance above the lighthouse a snug-looking homestead has been built for the accommodation of the lighthouse keeper, this being connected with the tower by a long flight of steps, whilst the cottage again is placed in communication with the settlement at Elmslie's Bay by a road cut round the headland. The lighthouse when completed will prove a great convenience to those who know what it is to have to navigate the Pass on a dark night, and now with the light at the extremity of the land on one side, and the beacon at the edge of the reef on the other, there will be no difficulty in attempting to go through the French Pass during any weather."
