(Received September 1, 0.40 a.m.) Melbourne, August 31. Arrived, this morning, the P. and 0. steamship Rome, with the Brindisi mails dated London, July 25. The grand stand at the Melbourne Cricket Club’s ground, was totally destroyed by lire this morning. The damage is estimated at £6OOO. A serious tiro occurred at Flemington this evening, resulting in the total destruction of the racing stables. Four thoroughbred horses, including Jessie, were destroyed by the fire. (Received September 1,2 p.m.) September 1, The statement that Jessie was amongst the horses burned to death at
Flemiugton stables was incorrect. None of the animals destroyed were prominent ones. The Hon. Mr Service, Premier and Colonial Treasurer, has agreed to Griffiths’ proposal for a uniform import duty of three shillings per gallon on colonial wines. (Received September 1, noon.) Sydney, September 1. Arrived, this morning, the steamship Manapouri. Small-pox is increasing in Sydney and suburbs, and fresh cases have occurred in Kent street, in the city, and at the glebe. The patients have been placed in quarantine.
