BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall last evening • .present—His Worship the Mayor (D. Hannan, Esq.), Councillors Nicholson, Home, Maloney, Burger, Rudkin, Ziegler, and Davies. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved of; and the inward read, received, and considered. A letter was read from the Secretary of the Fire Brigade, on behalf of the brigade, requesting the Council to take steps without delay to have the new Station front painted. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Maloney, the letter was referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act. In reply to a letter from Mr R. Millson, butcher, calling the attention of the Council to the necessity of repairing Union street, as there were very dangerous holes in it, and requesting that the street might be widened, Cr. Nicholson moved and the Mayor seconded—" That Mr Millson's letter be referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act in regard to the maintenance of Union street; and, in respect of widening Union street, that the committee report to next meeting of the Council." The motion was carried. A letter was vend from the PropertyTax Commissioner, asking for a return of the value of real property owned bv the Borough Council and the area and value, as afc Ist October, 1882, that being the date at which {lie assessment was made for the department. By motion of the Mayor, seconded t>y Cr. Rudkin the Town Clerk was instructed to furnish the required information to the Property Tax Commissioner. The Town Clerk then read the Publie Works Committee's Report, dated August IG, as follows : REPORT. Present Cr. Rudkin (chair), the Mayor, Crs. Burger and Davies. 1. That the fireplaces in the Town Clerk's office and housekeeper's sittingroom be repaired at once, as they are in a dangerous state. 2. That the boundary track be put in repair immediately, and that the Town Clerk write to the Westland County Council, notifying it of the intention of the borough to do so, under clause 188 of the "Municipal Corporations Act, 1876," and also to the contractor. 3. That the Chairman of this Committee be empowered to get the gravel put on Fourth street, at Bromond's and Kroener's corners. 4. The Committee beg to report hayino l
visited the Cemetery, and found the fence in a very dilapidated condition, and choked up with scrub ; and they recommend that the scrub be cleared, and the fence patched up for the present. The report was received and considered seriatim. Clause 1 was approved of. In reference to clause 2, the Mayor moved the following amendment: — "That the Public Works Committee be empowered to interview the contractor, and come to a definite understanding in reference to repairs to the boundary track." The amendment was seconded by Cr. Burger and carried. Clause 3 was adopted as read. With regard to clause 4, the Mayor moved the following amendment—- " That clause 4 be referred to the Finance Committee, to bring up a report re the Cemetery at the next financial meeting; and in the meantime the Chairman of the Public Works Committee be authorised to expend the sum of £2, The amendment was secouded by Cr. Maloney and carried. The Finance Committee's Report was read and received, and accounts to the amount of £47 2s 6d passed for payment. Tenders, of which there were seven, for the extension of Fifib street were opened, and the lowest, P. Whelan's, .£4O, accepted. A general rate of 6d in the £, for the period commencing on the Ist April 1884, and ending on the 31st March, 1885, was struck by the casting vote of the Mayor. The division on the motion was as follows :—For— The Mayor, Crs. Nicholson, Rudkin, Maloney. Against Crs. Ziegler, Home, Davies. Burger ; who considered a Is rate was necessary.
