KUMARA HOSPITAL.

The first meeting of the newly-elected Hospital Committee was held in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening; present—Mr A. C. Campbell (in the -chair), Messrs W. Nicholson, H. Burger, T. T. Jones, jan., J. Metcalfe, J. Wooldridge, F. Payne, G. 11. Rudkin, J. S. Nicholas, and G. Watson. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The election of officers resulted as follows:

Treasurer: Mr A. C. Campbell. House Committee : Messrs Metcalfe, Rudkin, and Burger. Finance Committee : Messrs Nicholson, Rudkin, J. S. Nicholas, and J. Wooldridge; three to form a quorum. A letter was read from the SurgeonSuperintendent, drawing the attention of the Committee to certain matters, with suggestions and recommendations. The following is a copy of the letter: — The Chairman Hospital Committee, Kumara.

Sir—l beg to draw the Committee’s attention to the want of drainage boxes, causing a bad smell to arise from the head of the tunnel, through soakage at the bottom of the jump-up. Also to mention that no time should be lost if the hospital garden is intended to supply the kitchen with vegetables.

Also that the floor of the verandah is getting very rotten, through exposure to the weather ; and I venture to suggest that the exposure and decay will be saved if the roof has another short length of iron added to it, and enclosed with glass from the ceiling half way to the ground. The above would supply a day ward for visitors or convalescents, and furnish the hospital with a well-lighted roomy apartment in which to perform operations, and is a want very much required. Shelves are required in the storeroom, and stops to some of the windows that are drafty. I have, &c., F. A. Monckton, Surgeon-Superintendent. Kumara, August 19, 1884. It was resolved that the matter of the verandah be left in the hands of the House Committee; and that said Committee interview the Wavdsman re putting the garden in order. The Secretary was instructed to write to the various Friendly Societies asking a refund iu the matter of the late advertising, in distant papers, for a medical officer. The Secretary was also instructed to apply to the Borough and County Councils for the usual ‘ subsidies to the Kumara Hospital, A deputation consisting of Messrs Campbell, Nicholson, Burger, Metcalfe, and Wooldridge, was appointed to wait on the various Ministers in town in reference to some Sunday being set apart in their respective churches, and collections raised for the benefit of the Hospital; said Committee to report at next meeting. This concluded the business.
