THE LATE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP. PAYING OYER THE STAKES. THE SAFETY OF THE DYNAMITE STEAMSHIP HASSIA. (Received August 19, 0.55 a.m.) Sydney, August 18. A large meeting took place at Punch’s Hotel to-day, when the stakes in the late sculling match were paid over. Hanlan admitted that he had wilfully fouled Beach, because he believed that the latter had crossed over into his water. Hanlan expressed a desire to row another match with Beach, within three months; but Beach positively refused to meet the ex-champion within six months. Clifford also offered to row Hanlan, but the latter refused to take up.the challenge. The captain of the steamer Tomki, who was present, stated that he was compelled to x’un close upon Hanlan’s boat in order to avoid running aground. Melbourne, August 18. The steamship Hassia, for the safety of which fears were entertained, has arrived here, (Received August 19, 12.80 p.m.) August 19. Poppens, the absconding hotelkeeper from Wellington, wha was released from bail last Friday, has been rearrested at the instance of his surety, who suspects that Poppens intended to make his escape.
